German transport minister rejects the concept of a ātransport transitionā
The new German transport minister, Andreas Scheuer, has said he doesnāt like the concept ātransport transition,ā news agency Reuters reports. The German word āVerkehrswende," literally meaning ātransport turnaround,ā describes a set of decarbonisation and efficiency-boosting measures in the sector and has been used analogously with āenergy transition.ā Scheuer said it indicates āthat the wrong direction has been takenā, and that he favours a combination of āoffers and incentivesā over ābans and patronisingā to achieve cleaner air and āgood mobility.ā āWe donāt want to demonise the car,ā Scheuer said.
³Ņ±š°ł³¾²¹²Ō²āās transport sector has not reduced its CO2 emissions since 1990 and the countryās car industry is embroiled in a far-reaching scandal over manipulated nitrogen oxide emissions levels from diesel cars.
