German transport minister rejects the concept of a ā€œtransport transitionā€

Reuters

The new German transport minister, Andreas Scheuer, has said he doesn’t like the concept ā€œtransport transition,ā€ news agency Reuters reports. The German word ā€œVerkehrswende," literally meaning ā€˜transport turnaround,’ describes a set of decarbonisation and efficiency-boosting measures in the sector and has been used analogously with ā€œenergy transition.ā€ Scheuer said it indicates ā€œthat the wrong direction has been takenā€, and that he favours a combination of ā€œoffers and incentivesā€ over ā€œbans and patronisingā€ to achieve cleaner air and ā€œgood mobility.ā€ ā€œWe don’t want to demonise the car,ā€ Scheuer said.
³Ņ±š°ł³¾²¹²Ō²ā’s transport sector has not reduced its CO2 emissions since 1990 and the country’s car industry is embroiled in a far-reaching scandal over manipulated nitrogen oxide emissions levels from diesel cars.
